Viagra Versus Cialis: What Is the Difference and Which Lasts Longer?
Viagra versus Cialis is mainly a comparison between two PDE5 inhibitors used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED): sildenafil and tadalafil. Viagra contains sildenafil and typically works for several hours, while Cialis contains tadalafil and can remain effective for up to 36 hours. Both require sexual stimulation to produce an erection.
The biggest practical difference is therefore not simply which medicine is “stronger.” Viagra is generally used when needed before sexual activity, while Cialis offers a much longer treatment window and also has a lower-dose daily treatment option. The best choice depends on individual response, frequency of sexual activity, side effects, other medicines, and personal preference.

What Is Viagra?
Viagra is the brand name for sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It was developed as an oral treatment for erectile dysfunction and is also widely available in generic sildenafil formulations.
For ED, sildenafil works by enhancing the natural nitric oxide–cGMP pathway involved in penile blood flow. When sexual stimulation occurs, this can make it easier to achieve and maintain an erection.
Viagra does not create sexual desire and does not cause an automatic erection. Sexual stimulation is required for sildenafil to have its intended effect.
Common sildenafil doses for erectile dysfunction include 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. The 50 mg dose is commonly used as a starting point, with the dose adjusted according to effectiveness and tolerability. Our guide to 100 mg of sildenafil explains the higher sildenafil dose in more detail.
What Is Cialis?
Cialis is the brand name for tadalafil. Like sildenafil, tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, but it remains in the body considerably longer.
This longer duration gives Cialis two distinct approaches to ED treatment. It can be taken on demand before anticipated sexual activity, or tadalafil can be prescribed at a lower dose as a once-daily treatment for appropriate patients.
For on-demand treatment, 10 mg is commonly used initially and may be adjusted depending on response and tolerability. 20mg of Cialis represents the higher commonly recommended on-demand strength.
Lower-dose tadalafil can instead be used continuously. Our guide to tadalafil 5 milligrams explains how this daily approach works.
Which Works Faster: Viagra or Cialis?
There is no dramatic difference in onset for many patients. Viagra is commonly taken approximately one hour before sexual activity, although it may begin working earlier in some people. Cialis may produce an effect from approximately 30 minutes after dosing.
These figures should not be interpreted as guarantees. The actual onset varies between individuals and can be affected by factors such as food, other medicines, health conditions, and individual response.
One practical difference is that a high-fat meal can delay sildenafil absorption and therefore delay the onset of Viagra. Tadalafil can generally be taken without regard to food.
Which Lasts Longer: Viagra or Cialis?
Cialis lasts considerably longer than Viagra. This is one of the clearest differences when comparing Viagra versus Cialis.
Sildenafil generally provides a useful treatment window of several hours. Tadalafil can remain effective for up to 36 hours after an on-demand dose.
Neither figure describes how long an erection should last. A man does not normally remain erect throughout the effective period. Instead, the medicine can make it easier to achieve an erection when sexual stimulation occurs during that window.
The longer duration of Cialis can reduce the need to coordinate medication and sexual activity as closely. Viagra provides a shorter treatment window, which some people may prefer.
Is Cialis Stronger Than Viagra?
It is not accurate to say that Cialis is simply “stronger” than Viagra. The doses cannot be compared milligram for milligram because tadalafil and sildenafil are different medicines with different pharmacological properties.
For example, Cialis 20 mg is not one-fifth as strong as Viagra 100 mg simply because the tablet contains fewer milligrams. Milligram values only describe the amount of that particular active ingredient.
Both medicines can be effective for erectile dysfunction when an appropriate dose is used. Individual response varies, so one person may respond better to sildenafil while another may prefer tadalafil.
Viagra 100 mg Versus Cialis 20 mg
Viagra 100 mg and Cialis 20 mg are both higher on-demand doses within their respective ED treatment ranges, but their dosing characteristics are different.
Sildenafil 100 mg may be used when a lower sildenafil dose does not provide an adequate response and the higher dose is tolerated. Its main treatment window remains relatively short compared with tadalafil.
Tadalafil 20 mg is likewise a higher on-demand tadalafil dose, but its effect can remain available for much longer. We cover this dose separately in our guide to tadalafil 20 milligrams.
The two doses should therefore not be treated as equivalent quantities. Choosing between them involves more than comparing the numbers printed on the tablets.
Viagra Versus Cialis for Spontaneity
Cialis generally provides more flexibility around the timing of sexual activity because of its longer duration.
With on-demand tadalafil, there can be a treatment window extending well beyond the day on which the tablet was taken. Lower-dose daily tadalafil goes a step further by maintaining continuous drug exposure, reducing the need to time an individual dose before each sexual encounter.
Viagra has a shorter treatment window and is normally taken specifically in anticipation of sexual activity. For people who prefer a clearly defined on-demand treatment period, this may not necessarily be a disadvantage.
Can Cialis Be Taken Every Day?
Yes. One important difference between Cialis and Viagra is that tadalafil has an established once-daily dosing option for erectile dysfunction.
Lower tadalafil strengths may be prescribed once daily at approximately the same time each day. This approach may be considered for men who anticipate frequent sexual activity and for whom daily treatment is medically appropriate.
Higher on-demand strengths such as tadalafil 10 mg and 20 mg should not simply be converted into daily treatment without medical guidance.
Does Food Affect Viagra and Cialis Differently?
Yes. Food is one of the practical differences between the two medicines.
A high-fat meal can slow the absorption of sildenafil. If Viagra is taken immediately after a substantial high-fat meal, it may take longer to begin working.
Tadalafil absorption is not affected by food in the same clinically significant way, so Cialis can generally be taken with or without a meal.
This does not mean that Cialis is universally preferable. It simply makes meal timing less important when using tadalafil.
Viagra Versus Cialis Side Effects
Because Viagra and Cialis belong to the same drug class, some adverse effects overlap. Both can cause headache, flushing, indigestion and nasal congestion.
However, their side-effect profiles are not identical. Sildenafil is particularly associated with visual effects in some patients, such as changes in color perception or blurred vision. Tadalafil is more characteristically associated with back pain and muscle aches.
Side effects can also become more likely or troublesome at higher doses. This is one reason why the highest available dose should not automatically be chosen.
Can Viagra or Cialis Be Taken With Alcohol?
Moderate alcohol consumption does not necessarily prevent PDE5 inhibitors from working, but larger amounts of alcohol can create problems.
Alcohol itself can impair erectile function. It can also contribute to dizziness and reduced blood pressure. With tadalafil in particular, substantial alcohol consumption combined with the vasodilating effect of the medicine may increase the likelihood of symptoms related to low blood pressure.
Avoiding excessive alcohol is therefore sensible when either medicine is being used.
Who Should Not Take Viagra or Cialis?
Both medicines have important contraindications. Most notably, neither Viagra nor Cialis should be combined with nitrate medicines used for conditions such as angina. The combination can produce a potentially dangerous fall in blood pressure.
Additional assessment may be required for people with certain cardiovascular conditions, very low blood pressure, significant kidney or liver impairment, or those taking medicines that can interact with PDE5 inhibitors.
People should also seek urgent medical attention for serious symptoms such as chest pain, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or an erection lasting longer than four hours.
Can You Take Viagra and Cialis Together?
Viagra and Cialis should not be combined unless a healthcare professional has specifically directed treatment. Taking sildenafil and tadalafil together can increase exposure to PDE5-inhibitor effects and may increase the risk of adverse reactions such as headache, dizziness and low blood pressure.
If one medicine does not provide the expected result, taking another PDE5 inhibitor on top of it is not an appropriate way to increase the effect. Factors such as timing, food, sexual stimulation, dose, other medications, and the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction should first be considered.
Viagra Versus Cialis: Which Is Better?
Neither Viagra nor Cialis is universally better. Both are established treatments for erectile dysfunction, but their different durations and dosing options make them suitable for different preferences and circumstances.
Viagra may be preferred when a shorter, clearly defined on-demand treatment window is wanted. Cialis may be preferred when a longer window or the possibility of a lower-dose daily regimen is important.
Individual response matters as well. A person who experiences good effectiveness and few adverse effects with sildenafil may have little reason to change treatment simply because tadalafil lasts longer. Conversely, someone who finds timing sildenafil inconvenient may prefer the flexibility offered by tadalafil.
Quick Summary: Viagra or Cialis?
- For a shorter on-demand window: Viagra may be suitable.
- For a longer treatment window: Cialis lasts substantially longer.
- For daily ED treatment: tadalafil has a lower-dose once-daily option.
- If meal timing matters: Cialis is less affected by food.
- For effectiveness: both can work well, and individual response is important.
- For safety: both have contraindications and potentially important drug interactions.
The practical question in a Viagra versus Cialis comparison is therefore not simply which medicine is more powerful. The more useful question is which dosing profile, duration, tolerability, and treatment approach best fits the individual patient.
