Patrick Soon-Shiong, former surgeon and current entrepreneur that Forbes estimated to be worth $10.1 billion, recently announced that his company, NantHealth, and foundation are purchasing a cluster of DNA sequencers capable of sequencing a human genome for $1,000.

This purchase was made as part of deal between NantHealth and Providence Health & Services (a not-for-profit Catholic hospitals system) to provide DNA sequencing and other similar genetics services to 22,000 patients diagnosed with cancer annually at Providence’s 34 hospitals. Soon-Shiong plans to pair DNA sequencing machines with computation technologies he developed in order to analyze tumor genomes quickly and easily—he claims that NantHealth has the ability to analyze the data from a tumor sample in 47 seconds and transport in 18 seconds.
