Piedmont Healthcare, an Atlanta-based healthcare provider group, recently announced its publishing of uncensored patient ratings and reviews of its physicians. The reviews, written by verified Piedmont patients, are collected by an independent patient research company and posted regardless of whether the comments are positive or negative. Already, over 200 physicians at Piedmont have had their ratings listed on the website and the 800 remaining will follow after they have reached 30 reviews each. “Posting these reviews is about becoming more transparent about our customer experience and also empowering the public to make informed decisions about their health,” explained Matt Gove, Piedmont Chief Marketing Officer, in a press statement. Piedmont Healthcare’s patient ratings initiative is not alone; several other hospitals are taking similar steps. The University of Utah Health Care recently announced a similar initiative and Integris Health in Oklahoma plans to post consumer reviews of physicians as well. According to many industry experts, including James Merlino, MD, Cleveland Clinic Chief Experience Officer, “this is clearly a trend that is coming.”
